Eduardo Martin Sturla, from Argentina, has been a triathlete for 24 years. He is the only professional triathlete who lives and trains in Argentina. In 2001, he also became the first South American athlete to win an Ironman competition, consisting of a 3.8km swim, a 180km bike and a marathon 42km run, raced in that order and without a break. He achieved this important victory in Florianopolis, Brazil, the only official Ironman triathlon that takes place in South America.
Not satisfied with that achievement, Sturla has repeated the victory on three other occasions (2008, 2009 and 2011), winning Ironman Brazil more times than any other athlete in the history of the race. In Florianopolis, he also holds the bike course record of 4h23min. That makes Sturla undoubtedly someone of major reference in this sport.
But his achievements do not end in Brazil. With hard work and dedication, in October 2008 he qualified for the Ironman World Championship, held annually in Kona, Hawaii. Sturla successfully placed in the world’s top 10. He was also 13th in the World Championships twice (2001, 2007) and 19th place in 2010. Sturla also placed in the top 10 in the Kona Pro Rankings in 2011. He placed 8th overall in the world standings.
These results make him a prominent member of the elite of this international sport.
