Finally I have some time to sit down and tell how was my first experience in an XTERRA. It's completely different to anything else I have done. I always wanted to make an experience in the offroad world but for fear of getting hurt or prioritize the training for Ironman i never tried it before but now i had the right circumstances to do so.
Also in here there is a huge variety of races and the places where happens the events are amazing!
The race was over a distance of 1.5k swim, 30k mountain bike and 10k run in trails and sand. The swim was as always, there weren't many changes for me. Here in Australia the swimming level is high and I couldn't sleep in the first few meters. Once out of the water i was between the 5 or 6 guys overall and then started the most important part of the race that is cycling. But mountain biking has very little to do with road cycling .
When the circuit was not technical, was very good and fast, but when started the rocks, sand or narrow trails the lack of experience in mountain bike made all difference.
In the mountain bike there's no "cruce" pace and the limit is not only in the engine but in the control that you have on the bike and courage that you have to take risks. So I wanted to keep me under control.
But once with my feet on the ground, I was able to recover and finish 7th in general pro.
The running part was very hard but very entertaining, with steep ups and downs, running in the sand, crossing rivers... a communion with nature, a return to the essence, forget about clock/ splits.
I'm entering in a new season, a new stage where I am not just discovering new things in life but also new sensations in the sport. For many years I lived, breathed, dreamed triathlon. In winning races, to have big goals and go out and train in search of ever better times. It reaches a point in life that as a professional athlete i needed to stop looking at the numbers of the clock and to seek to enjoy, feel my body and feel no pressure to get a better or higher result than I've got. I don't have to prove nothing more to me, or anyone. But i will always be competitive and will give everything i have in a race.
Loved the XTERRA and I'll do it again soon. Now the focus is on the bike which is also what i like most.
I advise everyone to try a XTERRA. It is something totally different, it is a return to the essence and worth a try!
Big thanks to my friends that shared with me that weekend, we had a great time and i definetly enjoyed the XTERRA life style!
Looking forward for more!
NEVER GIVE UP!
